At Ashbourne Hilltop we believe that engaging children with exciting material and experiences motivates them to learn and develop the scientific attitude they need to have an open-mindedness approach and show curiosity about the world around them. Science is one of the most exciting and practical subjects and, as a result, a real joy for the teachers at Ashbourne Hilltop and the pupils. The pupils love the chance to learn through being hands-on and finding things out for themselves. It is the perfect way to understand the world around them. Science at Ashbourne Hilltop is taught through encouraging problem solving and critical thinking. We believe that these are two of the most important skills that children should learn in school. They are essential to making good decisions that lead to achievement and success during school and beyond.
As a school we follow the Cornerstones scheme, this provides imaginative scenarios that inspires creative thinking and opportunities for collaborative working, demonstrating new skills which encourage enterprise and independent thinking.
In 2019 Hilltop started running an exciting after school Crest Awards Science Club! The club is run on a Wednesday from 3.15 - 4.15. The club has been very successful, each week the club offers children the opportunity to learn through hands-on challenges by exploring the world around them. The children develop their investigative and teamwork skills. After completing all eight challenges, each child will receive a CREAT Superstar certificate and iron-on-badge. Conducting investigations such as: bouncy custard, sticky fingers, particle disco and leaky bottles.
